Week One:

A Play About Race and Memory

- I found this article to be very interesting and related to diversity in that it briefed an upcoming event at the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta, Ga. The theatre will be hosting an adaption of "Native Guard," a collection of poems that details the view of the Civil War through African American eyes. The article speaks much about the importance of not only remembering this piece of history but honoring it instead of the ladder which is honoring the Confederate symbols.

Week Two:

Draw the Circle Review

- This article reviews a show of monologues called "Draw the Circle" being performed at Rattlestick Playwrights Theatre in Manhattan. It concerns a story of a girl transitioning genders to a male and the trials that he faces throughout the transition. Because transgenderism is rarely portrayed in media, I find this play crucial to diversity not only in the LGBT community but in general representation as well.

Week Three:

A Show By and About Deaf Life

- In this article, diversity involving the Deaf community is discussed. A man being interviewed states that deaf people are not portrayed in movies, plays, writings, ect unless it is to teach a main character a lesson in some way. The article introduces a new show coming out called "This Close" which is about a deaf man and woman who are best friends and the show captures their daily lives. This is an important breakthrough because it is not only inclusive of deaf people but all about them and also portrays other types of diverse characters.

Week Four:

Black Panther for Black America
- The famous and very popular Black Panther movie is discussed in this article from the NY Times. It speaks about how the Black community was affected and inspired by the movie in all aspects and about the amount of feedback that they gave. The movie is important because it finally gives African-Americans a superhero to admire. It also connects to the lower class Black community in the scenes where the young boys are playing basketball and such. The movie is very important to diversity in the media community.

Week Five:

Diversity in Olympics

- This article discusses many athletes in the Winter Olympics and how they are inspiring people everywhere. The Olympics should be for those physically able and not based on race or gender. The article points out that there is becoming more diversity in it, specifically the winter section, where athletes from Jamaica, Nigeria, and other African countries where winter competitors are not usually found. This is important because people from all over should be given the same opportunities regardless of their home environment. If they put in the constant work and effort, they should be able to compete.

Week Six:

Diverse Runways

- In this article, it speaks about New York's fashion runways and how they were the most diverse yet. The fashion runways are growing and the increasing amount of races, ages, genders, and ages being welcomed to them is too. This subject is important to discuss because it can give inspiration from people of all different backgrounds to do the same if they are passionate about it. It also gives people viewing the show a chance to see more variety and possibly relate to the different models.

Week Seven:

Indian-American Netflix Deal

- Hasan Minhaj is the first Indian-American to make a deal with Netflix for his own comedy show, in this article. In entertainment, Indian-Americans are often given smaller roles that fit into a very small category (i.e the really smart or religious one) and in the news, they are often portrayed as possible terrorists. This deal for Minhaj is a big deal because it can give people a better outlook to see that not every Indian-American person is the same. It is important to remember that people are all different and not out to destroy America, this show could attract anyone who likes to laugh and bring that variety forward.

Week Eight:

Hall of Fame Diversity
- This article talks about two famous, African-Americans who are in the hall of fame, and their stories of how they got there. It speaks about specialization among athleticism and how that is all people today want to do. I chose this article because of how it speaks about African American athletes and how they need to specialize in a certain sport if they want to go far with it. An underlying reason this may be, especially in the 1980s when these two competed, is bias against them. They felt the need to choose a sport and work harder so that they could have the same opportunities as Caucasians.

Week Nine:

Plus-Size Male Models

- Just as acceptance of plus-size women becomes more popular, the same should be with men. In society, men are often set to very strict standards as well as women, especially with their body types. This article talks about plus-size males creating some of Calvin Klein's ads to bring this subject into light. This is important to diversity because men should also be accepted in their bodies just as women are becoming so. The re-creation of the ad has gained much popularity and brought forth the rebellion against standards in order to hopefully inspire fashion designers to better represent every-day men.

Week Ten:

Division of the Classes

- This article reviews a new television show called "The Workshop" about a group of young adults taking a writing class in a lower class city in France. The class is taught by a famous novelist who is very much upper class and struggles to see eye-to-eye with her students. I chose this article because I think it could be an important addition to the subject of creating diversity. Something not usually discussed in terms of diversity or in much conversation at all is the divide between upper, middle, and lower class not just monetarily but in almost every other aspect as well.

Week Eleven:

Women and Sports on Stage

- In this article, women actors are being noticed and appreciated for their athleticism in acting. It mentions a few plays that combine theatre and sports. It points out that women's bodies are often seen in a sexual light, especially in sports. The article, however, states that women's bodies should be appreciated in sports and every other aspect because these women performing and even playing real sports are strong, not just sexy.

Week Twelve:

First Woman in National Air&Space Museum

- This article talks about Dr. Ellen Stofan and her being admitted to lead the National Air and Space Museum. This is important to diversity in that many women put just as much if not more effort into their work and research as men, therefore they should also be recognized and given the same opportunities. Because this is happening and breaking news, it will also inspire more women to go into similar fields if they are interested.

Week Thirteen:

Diversity in Companies

- In this article, it is discussed that on May 1st the top 50 most diverse companies will be recognized. Although this is not a topic that should be of large issue because all companies should be diverse without question, it is important to talk about because it is a good example for other, less diverse companies. With people of different races, backgrounds, genders, and any other characteristics working in every field, there is not only more opportunity for those people but more experiences to represent people like them.
